What would be the reasons to look for cheap campervans for rent?
Off course an expensive motorhome will be more luxurious and for many people this will make a big difference for the amount of fun they have during their holiday. There are some benefits to cheap and cheerful though:
- You can stay away longer for the same amount of money;
- Often cheaper motorhomes are older and therefore look less beautiful and shiny. This in some countries will make you blend in a bit more;
- If you have less facilities on board as the campervan is smaller, you will be more involved in everything that goes on in the area you are traveling. You cannot just stay in your motorhome the whole time, you need to get out!
- Spending less on the motorhome means you may be able to use the saved money for other fun things to do or even just to allow yourself to have more coffees at local cafes;
- If you don’t have a kitchen in your cheap campervan, you need to cook outside or use the communal kitchens of caravan parks. These are the ideal places to meet other travelers, make lifelong friends with people from all over the world;
- The cheap campervans for rent options often are smaller, which means far less fuel use, so another saving;
- A used rental motorhome will usually have it’s fair amount of dents and scratches, also on the inside. You don’t have to worry about little things as much, which is nice and relaxing.
In general, when you are thinking about a trip away with a campervan, there are a few things to consider beforehand.
Off course the amount of money you have available or are willing to spend is a big deciding factor on what you can rent. The typical idea is that young people will rent the cheapest little vans they can find, and the older you get, the more luxurious. This is not necessarily true though. In our opinion, the time to go for a bigger, better equipped motorhome is when traveling with young children. With kids it is a lot easier to have your own toilet and shower available, to have room to store toys, to be able to let them play with their toys while driving around, as they will have a table in the back and still having a safe spot while driving.
A cheap campervan for rent often does not have all facilities, and when you are older and a couple or single, it may be a lovely way to meet more people, to be a lot closer to nature and to have to improvise a bit more while traveling. When you don’t have all the luxury, it is nice if you have more time on your hands to go and look for those awesome nature spots to camp in or to go to other places than planned as you meet some nice people who tell you about special places or even invite you to come along to something they are going to do in the next few days. Many times being on the spot will leave to you hearing about special places that the locals know and that are not yet mentioned in the general tourist information that is available to everybody.
There is only one warning when renting a very cheap van in Australia or New Zealand:
There are a few companies around that have very cheap campervans for rent with slogans on them, hand painted and in many different colours. The colours are not really a problem, the problem is that some of the slogans are offensive. In Australia some councils are trying to ban these vans, as even on the roofs they have slogans that people in apartments along the beach are offended by. These Vans are no fun to drive around in, in our opinion. Off course you make your own decision, they are cheap, but just know what you might get into!
